Designers Voice - Context

Sequence

The learning design comprises three main activity stages, a range of resources and support mechanisms. View the Learning Design Sequence for a graphical representation of this learning design.

Tasks

The subject outline and an extensive set of readings and resources are provided at the beginning of the subject. Students form teams, select an educational or training problem put forward by a real client. They then work directly with a client representative to produce a multimedia package that addresses the initial client brief. This involves three stages...

Resources

The resources have been developed as a collection of html and pdf files. They are delivered online as part of a WebCT site, plus on CD-ROM as a back-up in case Web access is a problem...

Comment from Project Team...

The nature of the case resources represents the "high quality end of the spectrum" in the field of multimedia development as the cases provide a rich insight into the design, development and implementation of complex large scale interactive multimedia projects. The evaluators of this exemplar noted that this needs to be made explicit to students so as not to influence them to have unrealistic expectations of their own individual performance and their team’s performance within the course.

Supports

Supports include peer and instructor support, online discussions, technical support via access to ICT tools, templates, guiding questions and models...

Setting Notes

A combination of online and face-to-face methods are used. The subject is offered on-campus and as part of an off-shore program in Hong Kong...

Outcomes

Enhance learners’ understanding of the design, process and project management issues that arise in multimedia product development;...

Assesment

The assessment tasks are integrated into the three-stage learning design. Outcomes from each stage comprise the student’s set of assessable items...

ICT Contribution

Although this is a campus-based subject both in Australia and Hong Kong, there are often limited opportunities for students to meet face-to-face due to work and family commitments, and long travelling times to campus...

Pedagogy Notes

The design is based on a constructivist approach to learning which draws on case-based techniques to support learner’s project work. Specifically the learning design is a particular implementation of...

History

This learning design originated from a doctoral research study which sought to investigate how learners’ interpreted rich, contextual information in the form of cases...

Evaluation

Qualitative case study research has been conducted. Student work from case analysis, group project and reflective tasks was collected as a key data source. ...

Designer Debrief

This learning design implementation was effective in helping learners to develop their understanding of multimedia project work...

Comment from Project Team...

The findings from the evaluation of this exemplar (the application of the Evaluation and Redevelopment Framework, ERF) concluded that this learning design implementation facilitates high quality learning. It was ranked highly against all four principles purported to contribute to high quality learning, that is, engaging and challenging learners, acknowledging the learning context, and providing opportunities for practice.
